Plot summary
Doug Rawlins is a Christian journalist and blogger from America who speaks openly about his beliefs. He travels to Cairo, Egypt, to give speeches, and there members of the Iranian regime seize him. He is taken to the Middle East and put on trial on phony spying charges. His wife Liz works at the State Department and wants the American government to act for him. When the government will not step in, she decides to travel there and free him herself.

- Jordan's film commission kept the shoot secret for fear of objections from the Iranian government, and the production had heavy security. When Iran learned that director Cyrus Nowrasteh was filming in Amman, it voiced its displeasure to the Jordanian government.
- Another actress was set to play Liz but left only weeks before filming over a conflicting commitment. Jim Caviezel recommended Claudia Karvan, his co-star on Long Weekend (2008), for the part.
- Cyrus Nowrasteh cited real cases of American nationals imprisoned by the Iranian government while writing the film, naming Xiyue Wang and Robert Levinson among them.
- Dinesh D'Souza, one of the film's producers, had previously produced political documentaries including 2016: Obama's America, Hillary's America, Death of a Nation and Trump Card. Infidel was his first narrative film.
