Plot summary
Dante Alighieri works in Italy on the poem that becomes the Divine Comedy, searching for mystical knowledge as he writes. In a hidden cellar of the Vatican, a priest finds a handwritten manuscript of the Divine Comedy. Nick Tosches, a writer known as an expert on Dante, is employed by Joe Black, a mafia don in New York, to confirm that the manuscript exists and then to steal it for him. Louie, an assassin, and Lefty, another of the don's men, travel with Nick to the Vatican, where the document is said to be authentic and can be brought back to the don.
