Plot summary
Joe Harper is a depressed, out of work actor, and he has a plan to climb out of it: stage a Christmastime Hamlet in Hope, the Derbyshire village where he grew up, and use the takings to keep the local church out of the hands of land developers. His agent Margaretta D'Arcy advises against it. The auditions bring him six performers, none of them the cream of the crop: Nina Raymond, Henry Wakefield, Terry DuBois, Tom Newman, Carnforth Greville and Vernon Spatch. They are free over the holidays and all agree to work for a share of the profits, which may amount to nothing. Joe takes the title role, his sister Molly helps move the company and their props into a church due for demolition, and Fadge arrives as costume and set designer.
