Plot summary
Charlie Walker, a Black Korean War veteran, brings his family to San Francisco in 1971 to build a life of economic independence and to be his own boss. The city he arrives in is full of people who doubt him and people who pretend to help, and he does not take no for an answer. When two tankers collide and oil fouls the coastline, a cleanup contract comes within reach, a kind of work no Black man has been offered before. Charlie wins it and starts with three trucks and a strong work ethic. The company that hired him answers with racial discrimination and institutional racism while he tries to save the shore.
