Plot summary
Pasquale Cicciacalda is a shoemaker from Casoria living in Monza in 1630, when the city is under Spanish rule. He is a widower: his wife Provvidenza, a midwife, is dead, and he has twelve children, six pairs of twins. When he loses his job he can no longer feed them, so he devises a ploy. He dresses himself and the children as poor monks and they go about asking for food and charity. On the road he meets an impoverished peasant and takes him along, granting him the rank of Half-Monk. The false monks knock at the castle of the widowed marquise Fiorenza, who begs Pasquale to stop her wedding to the sinister Don Egidio.
