Plot summary
In Brescello, Don Camillo runs the parish while Peppone Bottazzi serves as the Communist mayor. The two quarrel constantly, and after the priest pulls a political prank, the mayor's side retaliates by taking Don Camillo's prize chickens. Peppone then aims higher and declares himself a candidate for the national parliament. A young comrade named Clotilde arrives from the city to help with his campaign, and the mayor's wife, uneasy about her, brings her worries to Don Camillo, who tries to keep the household from breaking apart. Peppone, for his part, still needs to pass the fifth grade examination. Warnings from above do not stop Don Camillo from taking the campaign trail against his rival.
