Plot summary
Adam Gherrity and Jane Kuang are three years into an exploration mission, stranded aboard a shuttle that no longer works. Adam, a botanist, tends the plants, the chickens and a goat, while Jane keeps up maintenance and tries to restore communications and navigation. They pass the time with exercise, chess, films and music. Both are married: Adam's wife Savannah is an aspiring politician, and Jane's husband Tom is sedentary. When Adam proposes sex as a stress reliever, Jane objects that there is no attraction, that they are both married, and that the shuttle carries no condoms. Adam wonders whether radiation has left her sterile. Jane leaves in disgust, and the argument continues.
