Plot summary
In the near future, an alien tentacle 10,000 miles tall and impossible to destroy appears in Earth's upper atmosphere, and people call it the Spike. The world panics at first, then gets used to living beneath it. For a struggling beekeeper and a grieving wanderer, the Spike becomes a personal problem when it teleports the beekeeper's beehives and the wanderer's prized car halfway across the country. The two are strangers to each other, and they join together on a dangerous road trip across a changed but recognizable America to recover what the Spike took.
