Plot summary
Owen keeps to himself at school, where Maddy, a fellow student, introduces him to The Pink Opaque, a young adult series about Isabel and Tara, two teenagers whose psychic link lets them fight the supervillain Mr. Melancholy, a figure able to warp time and reality. Because the show airs past Owen's bedtime and his father, Frank, objects to it, Owen slips out of the house to watch at Maddy's, and she tapes the episodes he misses. Maddy says the show feels more real to her than the life she leads. Two years on, the two are watching it together when she starts to cry and tells him she has decided to leave home, expecting Owen to come with her.

- Jane Schoenbrun wrote the script for I Saw the TV Glow three months after beginning hormone replacement therapy, during what they described as "overwhelming calamity" following coming out as transgender.
- The segments of the fictional show The Pink Opaque were shot on 35mm film but then transferred to VHS and Betamax in post-production.
- Benson, who played the lesbian character Tara Maclay on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, has a cameo in the film, which Schoenbrun said "felt healing in a way" because they had relied on Buffy as a coping mechanism during adolescence.
