Plot summary
Larry Valentine, a widower raising two children, works at a Brooklyn firehouse alongside Chuck Levine, a bachelor who dates often. Larry pulls Chuck clear when a burned building's floor gives way, and Chuck promises to repay him. A lapse in paperwork after the death of Larry's wife Paula keeps him from naming his children to receive his life insurance, and a representative tells him a new spouse could be named instead. Larry reads about domestic partnerships and asks Chuck to register as his partner. Chuck agrees because he owes Larry his life, and he becomes Larry's primary beneficiary. Investigators soon question the timing of the arrangement.
