Plot summary
The Special Air Service is the British regiment sent on missions in some of the world's most dangerous places, and its selection course takes in only a fraction of the men who start it. Mickey Tomlinson, a military chef, puts himself forward for that course while keeping the rest of his military experience to himself, and he is troubled by flashbacks. JJ is on the course too, making his second attempt; candidates get two and only two. Roughly two hundred men begin the endurance tests, and the field is cut to thirty-six.
