Plot summary
A bunker built to repopulate humanity switches itself on after an extinction event. The robot Mother cultivates a human embryo and brings up the child, Daughter, through the years that follow. Daughter repairs Mother's hand and receives lessons in moral and ethical questions, along with warnings about an exam ahead. Mother keeps her from the world beyond the bunker, which she says is contaminated. While exploring the airlock, Daughter hears a wounded woman begging for help and lets her in wearing a hazmat suit, concealed from Mother. The woman refuses Mother's care and tells Daughter that robots like Mother hunt humans, and that she stayed alive by sheltering in a mine with other people. Daughter performs surgery on the woman's injured hip.
