Plot summary
In Montreal, unemployed fashion designer Sophie Malaterre has lunch with Claire Maras, who tells her about switch.com, a website for swapping homes with strangers. Sophie finds a Paris apartment near the Eiffel Tower owned by Bénédicte Serteaux, and they mail each other their apartment keys. She arrives in Paris on Saturday morning and spends a day riding a bicycle through the city. She notices one room in the flat is locked, and she has no key. The next morning, police break in while she is having a bath and arrest her. Detective Damien Forgeat interrogates her, believing she is Bénédicte. A beheaded body has been found in the room, and every trace of Sophie's life has been deleted from the internet, leaving her unable to prove who she is.
