Plot summary
A fire at the family home killed Allan Colleigh's father and scarred his sister Katherine, and Allan has been blind since that night, when he left paint thinner beside a heater. After eight months in a mental hospital his sight comes back in blurry images, and he returns to the house to live with Katherine. She has taken in a boarder, Harold Dennis, a university student who speaks only in a whisper because of a throat injury. Allan cannot see him clearly. He records his fears on a reel-to-reel tape recorder and asks Olive, the woman he was engaged to before the fire, to watch for the lodger and describe him. Whispers follow Allan and a dark figure seems to come for him, and he cannot tell whether he is imagining it.
