Plot summary
Bernardo Mambelli, known to everyone as il Gandi, is a militant of the PCI and a boxer who works in a paint plant in Milan. His fellow workers know him for a tough attitude and for the way he stands up for their rights. Late one night he comes across a gang of fascists beating a frail young man, intervenes and takes the stranger back to his home. There he finds out that the man is Claudio, that he is homosexual, and that he has nowhere to go. Claudio is still recovering from the beating, so he stays on at Bernardo's place. His comrades and his girlfriend Maria begin to misread the arrangement, and Bernardo's standing among them is at risk.
