Plot summary
In 1930s Oklahoma, dust storms have ruined the farmland where Margaret Bellum lives with her daughters Rose and Ollie, the younger girl left deaf and mute by scarlet fever. Her youngest, Ada, died of that illness, and grief leaves Margaret sleepwalking at night unless she takes sleeping pills. Her husband Henry has gone to Philadelphia for construction work and wants the family to join him, but Margaret will not leave Ada's grave. Rose reads Ollie a tale of the Grey Man, who kills his family and can enter other people's bodies and control them. A neighbor's family is said to have been attacked by a drifter, and Margaret finds a preacher, Wallace, hiding in her barn in Henry's coat, saying her husband asked him to check on the family.
