Plot summary
At The Yellow Door, a beatnik café, poet Maxwell H. Brock performs while busboy Walter Paisley watches with admiration. Walter is in love with Carla, the hostess, and one night he tries to make a sculpture of her face. He is interrupted by Frankie, his landlady's cat, which has become stuck inside his wall. Walter tries to free the animal with a knife and accidentally kills it. He covers the cat in clay and leaves the knife embedded in it. The next morning he shows the piece to Carla and to his boss Leonard. Leonard dismisses it, but Carla praises it and persuades him to put it on display in the café. The other beatniks at The Yellow Door respond with acclaim.

- In mid-1959, American International Pictures asked Roger Corman to direct a horror film with only a $50,000 budget, a five-day shooting schedule and leftover sets from Diary of a High School Bride (1959).
SPOILER
Dick Miller said the film's statues had to be mannequins, and that he shot his hanging in the last scene with only gray make-up on because there was no time to put the plaster on him.- Corman said the story began with an evening he and screenwriter Charles Griffith spent drifting around beatnik coffeehouses, tossing ideas back and forth until they had the plot, which drew partly on Mystery of the Wax Museum.
