Stratford Johns
Biography
Stratford Johns was a South African-born British actor of stage, film and television. Born in Pietermaritzburg, he moved to Britain in 1948 and learned his craft over almost five years in repertory theater at Southend-on-Sea, then began taking small roles in British films, among them the Ealing comedy The Ladykillers (1955). His defining part was the hard-edged senior CID officer Charlie Barlow, created in Z-Cars in 1962 and carried into the spin-offs Softly, Softly, Softly, Softly: Task Force, Barlow at Large and Barlow, the last of which ended in 1975. Later screen work included Cromwell (1970) and the Ken Russell films Salome's Last Dance and The Lair of the White Worm (both 1988). In 1973 the Variety Club of Great Britain named him BBC TV Personality of the Year, and on stage he took the part of Daddy Warbucks in the first West End production of Annie.

Early training
During the Angry Young Men period, Johns belonged to the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre, where new playwrights like John Osborne brought fresh themes to British theater. The hard edges of his famous character Barlow owed much to the characterization changes pioneered there.
