Plot summary
Bol and Rial cross the English Channel by boat with other people seeking asylum after fleeing war-torn South Sudan. They arrive in Britain without their daughter, Nyagak. Three months later the government grants them probationary asylum and assigns them a shabby house with peeling walls on the outskirts of London, under strict restrictions or deportation. Their case worker Mark says he hopes they are among the good ones, and their tenement neighbors show them racism and hatred. Bol tries to assimilate while Rial keeps to her own customs. Apparitions of Nyagak and an unknown man vanish into the walls.
