Plot summary
Ruby, a classical ballet dancer, has won a scholarship to the Manhattan Conservatory of the Arts, where contemporary classes prove hard and April is the best dancer in her class. Her roommate Jasmine, known as Jazzy, dances at the school too, and a violinist there, Kyle, takes an interest in her. In a subway station Ruby watches Johnnie, a British violinist busking for money; a dance-off between two hip-hop crews ends when police arrive, and Ruby falls in the crush. Johnnie turns to help her, and while distracted he loses his violin and his earnings. Ruby learns he lives in the country illegally and cannot file a police report. She borrows a Conservatory violin for him and proposes a competition pairing a dancer with a string musician, whose prize could qualify him for a student visa.
