Maia Morgenstern
Biography
Maia Morgenstern is a Romanian actress of stage and screen whom Florin Mitu of AMOS News called a symbol of Romanian theater and film. Born in Bucharest, she trained at the city's Film and Theatre Academy and completed her studies in 1985. Her early stage work was at the Youth Theater in Piatra Neamt until 1988, after which she acted with Bucharest companies, including the National Theatre from 1990 to 1998 and Teatrul Bulandra from 1998. At Bucharest's Odeon Theater, she played Lola Lola in a Romanian-language staging of The Blue Angel in 2001 and 2002, earning critical praise. In Romania she became nationally known for her 1992 role as Nela in Balanta, titled The Oak in the United States, and English-speaking audiences likely know her best as Mary in The Passion of the Christ (2004), a part she learned phonetically in Aramaic.
