Plot summary
Across the generations of the Furlong family, one member is said to carry a strange gift or curse. Charlie, James's grandfather, lost his sight for a time whenever desire crossed his mind, and James's father Philip could switch off electrical things when he was afraid. James's own birth was violent and killed his mother. His grandmother Charlotte tells him about the family's odd inheritance, and the boy tests himself, hoping to find a power. The experiments bring death to the farm animals and then take Philip and Charlotte, leaving James alone at ten. At St. Judes reformatory he is bullied by Kevin and Stephen and befriended by Liam. Fearing what he can do, he hides in a forest, until Mae, who has left her cancer treatment, finds his cottage.
