Plot summary

Clare has returned to a west coast town after her parents' divorce, and her old friend Stella talks her into a Halloween party. There she meets Aidan, who takes over the stage for karaoke, and the two leave together for a spontaneous first date. Clare, who has never had many friends, has set her sights on law school; Aidan plays music, though his parents, both doctors, want medicine for him. Clare's parents met in high school, married and divorced, so she says she does not want a boyfriend. Aidan offers a compromise: they date through the summer and then break up after one last date. When that summer ends, with Clare a day from leaving for college, Aidan has a last date planned and will not say where it goes.
