Plot summary
Mitsuyasu Sakai, a professor who studies Japanese folklore, comes upon an old scroll. It tells how Thunder and Lightning, demonic brothers, once roamed Japan until a samurai warrior trapped them inside a katana called the Sword of Storms. As Sakai reads, the brothers take possession of him and drive him to hunt for that blade. The attack on the sword's owner alerts the Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense, which sends Hellboy, Professor Kate Corrigan and the psychic Russell Thorne to investigate. When Hellboy lifts a katana from the ground, it carries him into a dimension that recalls ancient Japan, where a kitsune tells him he is holding the Sword of Storms. Abe Sapien and Liz Sherman are dispatched to the sites of unsettling earthquakes.
