Plot summary
Newcastle, 1974. Detective Sergeant Barry Harrigan has come back from a two-year secondment in Hong Kong, where he killed the head of a triad who was himself a police inspector, and he has six months of police service left. Two years earlier his house was set alight and his eleven-year-old daughter died in the fire; his wife had died of cancer some years before. The miners' strike and the power cuts have the country on a three-day week. Acting detective inspector Larson wants Harrigan to see out his time quietly, but a burglary takes him onto the Monkshire estate, his first beat, now in the grip of Cole and his family and their enforcer Dunstan. Harrigan helps a young mother, Vickey Frizell, and asks Superintendent Atkins to reopen the boarded-up section house.
