Plot summary
Fan Yau, a businesswoman, is found tortured and killed in Detroit. Detective Alex Cross, a psychologist working homicide with his childhood friend Thomas Kane and their colleague Monica Ashe, finds a charcoal drawing of the killing at the scene and concludes one professional carried it out, a man the team starts calling Picasso. Clues tie Fan Yau to two businessmen, Erich Nunemaker and Giles Mercier, and the detectives believe Nunemaker is the next target. Alex is also weighing an offer to join the FBI, which would mean moving to Washington and leaving the Detroit career of his pregnant wife Maria, while Kane and Ashe work to keep their own relationship hidden from him.

- Idris Elba was originally cast as Cross, but after QED International purchased the rights towards the end of 2010, Tyler Perry had replaced him in the starring role by January 2011, and Cohen was hired as director.
- The theatrical release poster carried the tagline “Don't ever cross Alex Cross”, which The Playlist at indieWire mocked, saying that “it'll be impressive if anything dumber appears on a movie poster this year”.
- Filming locations in northeast Ohio stood in for Detroit, Michigan, where the character works for the Detroit Police Department, and the production office stayed in Cleveland throughout, inside an empty portion of the old American Greetings Company Factory.
- The film earned $25,888,412 domestically and $8,730,455 internationally for a total of $34,618,867, less than its $35 million production budget.
- Double Cross was scheduled to be adapted into a film before this one was released, with Perry reprising his role, but the sequel was canceled following the critical and commercial failure of Alex Cross.
