Plot summary
Two hundred years before the birth of Christ, Rome is the superpower of the ancient world and considers itself invincible. Hannibal, a Carthaginian commander of twenty-six, is bound by an oath to avenge the wrongs his homeland has suffered. In the Second Punic War he leads an army of 40,000 soldiers and 37 elephants on a march of 1,500 miles to carry the fight onto Italian soil. His chief cavalry commander, Maharbal, rides with him, as do his brothers, Mago of the infantry and Hasdrubal, who commands in the Spanish provinces. On the Roman side are Gaius Terentius Varro, Publius Scipio and Fabius Maximus, the dictator whose Fabian strategy shapes Rome's answer. Among Hannibal's officers is Gisgo.
