Plot summary
Miranda Wells is a widow in New Orleans who is raising three children while managing the seafood restaurant of her boyfriend, Tucker Middendorf. A dentist tells her that a root canal she needs is beyond what she can pay, and when the children ask for pizza she says they cannot afford it. Bray Johnson, an engineering professor from Vanderbilt, comes to town carrying an envelope for Miranda and keeps postponing the moment he hands it over. Driving home from school pickup she rear-ends his truck; he follows her home, fixes the bumper with help from her son Greg, and stays for dinner with the family. He tells them that expecting good things shapes what happens. That night a hurricane carries off the mailbox and drops a tree through the roof.
