Plot summary
Hala Masood is seventeen, in her last year of high school, and living with her family in a Chicago suburb. She is cautious with her words and curious about what she sees and hears, subdued in one moment and adventurous in the next; she takes in her mother Eram's affectionate nagging and races through the suburb on her skateboard. Between two cultures, she is quietly drawing away from her Muslim faith and beginning to test her feelings for Jesse, a classmate. Her family expects a Muslim man to be arranged for her as a husband, and she is drawn to Jesse against their wishes.
