Plot summary
At the company N.E.R.D., two researchers work on splicing animal DNA into hybrids for medical use. Clive Nicoli and Elsa Kast have already produced Fred and Ginger, two large wormlike animals meant to mate each other. Their employers, Joan Chorot and William Barlow, forbid them from adding human DNA to the research. Clive and Elsa continue in secret and produce a female human-animal hybrid, planning to terminate her before full term. Elsa talks Clive into sparing her. The creature ages much faster than a human and learns like a child. After she spells out the company's acronym with toys, Elsa names her Dren. Elsa takes on a motherly role, and the two scientists let their other work slide.

- The script was originally meant to follow up Natali's Cube (1997), but the budget and restricted technology hindered the project. In 2007 it entered active development as a 75% Canadian and 25% French co-production, receiving a budget of $26 million.
- After a bidding war with Apparition, The Weinstein Company, Newmarket Films, First Look Studios and Samuel Goldwyn Films, Dark Castle Entertainment purchased the U.S. rights in February 2010, plus worldwide rights to any possible sequels, thinking they had "found the next Paranormal Activity".
- The film premiered on October 6, 2009, at the Sitges Film Festival, where it won "Best Special Effects" and was also in the running for the festival's "Best Film" award.
- Splice won the 2011 Telefilm Golden Box Office Award and its CAD$40,000 prize, for being the highest-grossing Canadian feature film in English in 2010.
- The film was nominated for Best Science Fiction Film at the 37th Saturn Awards, but lost to Inception, another film from Warner Bros. Pictures.
