Plot summary

At eight, Veronica took music lessons from Alicia, a single mother who also taught her own son Walter, at a time when Veronica's mother Roseangela was terminally ill; she resented what she took to be a relationship forming between Alicia and Jim, her father. Veronica now teaches music at a high school and faces a charge of sexually abusing Clive, one of her students, an accusation she knows to be false. She enters a plea deal and turns down every effort Jim makes to win her release, wanting to stay in prison. Jim, a health inspector, presses Clive's grandfather for a private word with the boy at the family's restaurant.
