Plot summary
Twenty years after the teenage crush he had on a football-mad schoolgirl at his own school, Gregory Underwood is back there as an English teacher. He is thirty-five years old. His lessons carry a political charge, and they stir two pupils, Frances and Douglas, to plot against a businessman they believe deals in torture equipment, with their teacher's help. Frances is sixteen, and Gregory has fantasies about her. A colleague at the school is romantically interested in him and he ignores her. He is caught between the ideals he teaches and breaking the law, and between a schoolgirl and a grown woman.
