Plot summary
Structural engineer John Garrity lives in Atlanta, Georgia, and is on his way to watch the passing of a newly discovered comet nicknamed Clarke with his family and neighbors. He is separated from his wife Allison, and their son Nathan has diabetes. An automated call at the supermarket tells John the household has been chosen for emergency sheltering. A fragment expected to land near Bermuda instead strikes Tampa and most of Florida around it. A second call sends the Garritys to Robins Air Force Base to board an evacuation flight: Clarke will hit Earth, and the impact would extinguish life within two days. They pack and drive away.
