Alex Nicol
Biography
Alex Nicol was an American actor and director who appeared in many Westerns and over forty features. Born in Ossining, New York, in 1916, he trained at the Feagin School of Dramatic Art and then joined Maurice Evans's theatrical company, making his Broadway debut in Henry IV, Part 1 (1939). Later a member of The Actors Studio, he portrayed Brick in the Tennessee Williams drama Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, directed by Elia Kazan. After signing with Universal, he won his first major part in Meet Danny Wilson (1952), and Anthony Mann gave him his best-remembered role as a weak psychopathic son of a rancher in The Man from Laramie (1955). His screen credits included Tomahawk (1951), Red Ball Express (1952), Strategic Air Command (1955), and Bloody Mama (1970). He directed The Screaming Skull (1958), taking a role in it as well, and directed episodes of Daniel Boone, The Wild Wild West, and Tarzan. He died in 2001.

Early training
After studying at the Feagin School of Dramatic Art, Nicol joined Maurice Evans' theatrical company. With that company he made his Broadway debut in a walk-on part in Henry IV, Part 1 in 1939.
Big break
George Sherman, a Universal Studios director, spotted Nicol while he was acting in Mister Roberts. Sherman was in New York City to film The Sleeping City, and he cast Nicol as a young doctor.
A change of course
After a picture wrapped, Nicol asked the front office at Universal to let him out of his contract. He figured that if this was his big break, he was not going very far.

Nicol went back to Hollywood, where he directed his first film, The Screaming Skull, in 1958. He also acted in it.

In Italy, one of Nicol's final jobs was directing Then There Were Three, also called Three Came Back. He produced this World War II combat and spy actioner and was one of its co-stars.
A change of course
Nicol's acting career was put on hold for five years by his army service. He was part of the 101st Cavalry and rose to Technical Sergeant.
