Plot summary

Eli and Daniel are Korean American brothers who run their late father's shoe store in Paramount, California. The store struggles, and they have an unlikely friendship with eleven-year-old Kamilla, a girl with a troubled home life. Mr. Kim, who owns a nearby liquor store, often badgers Kamilla, and Eli steps in, which strains his relationship with Mr. Kim. On April 29, 1992, the Rodney King verdict is pending. Kamilla skips school and comes to the store. Eli worries about keeping the business afloat while Daniel, who dreams of becoming a recording artist, gives customers heavy discounts. When the verdict acquits the officers, racial tensions build and riots erupt in South Central Los Angeles. Daniel and Eli argue over the discounts, and Daniel heads off to record a demo.
