Plot summary
Nancy Stokes is 55 and a widow. She hires Leo Grande, a young man who sells sex, to meet her in a hotel room. She explains she has never reached orgasm, and after her husband died two years earlier she decided to stop pretending. She feels awkward about her body and her age, and about having paid for this; Leo, who tells his mother he works on an oil rig, is at ease with his job and tries to set her at ease. Nancy taught religious education and is disappointed in her grown children. Her husband was the only man she had sex with; he thought oral sex was degrading, and for thirty-one years together they stuck to missionary intercourse without foreplay.
