Plot summary
Evelyn Wyckoff teaches Latin at the high school in a small Kansas town, well liked by her students and colleagues but lonely, greatly depressed and no longer satisfied by her work. At 35 she is still a virgin and near premature menopause. Her physician, Dr. Neal, thinks a romantic relationship would solve her problems and directs her to a psychiatrist in Wichita, Dr. Steiner. The talks lead her to admit that she wants love, and she flirts with Ed Eckles, a bus driver on her route to the city, who cares for her and suggests an affair. She hesitates because he is married. Then Rafe Collins, a college student on a scholarship who cleans classrooms after school, accosts her.
