Plot summary
Takechiyo is the eldest son of the shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu and the lawful heir to the shogunate. Assassins are sent after the boy because of a conflict over the succession. Iemitsu is dying of a disease and hates his son. Abe Shigetsugu, the prime minister, sends the killers in his master's name and wants Takechiyo's younger brother Tokugawa Tokumatsu to inherit instead. Hotta Masamori, lord of the Sakura clan, hires seven rōnin to keep the child alive, and Igō Gyōbu leads them.
