Plot summary
Each spring, a trading party sets out from Fort Bailey for Hudson Bay, carrying pelts to exchange for the goods the fort needs to last the winter. In 1815, the party never returns. Brigitte and Ginger Fitzgerald, stranded in the snowy Canadian wilderness with their horse, meet an elderly Cree seer who tells them one sister must kill a boy or the other sister will kill her. The horse bolts when unseen creatures howl, and a Cree man known as the Hunter brings the sisters to Fort Bailey, which werewolves have been besieging. The sisters claim to be daughters of a drowned trader looking for passage east. Doc Murphy, the fort's physician, treats a wound on Brigitte with a leech. The sisters are given a room in the fort.
