Plot summary
Leslie Whitehead is eight years old and living in Pennsylvania when Alex and Frank approach her, asking for help finding a dog and then telling her that her father is in trouble. They drive her away, sedate her and bring her to the house where they live, then insist her parents have stopped wanting her. As proof they give her a phone number for her father that is really a payphone, and after calls go unanswered she believes them. A boy named Donnie is held there too. The two are sexually abused and used in child pornography, for clients that include men of authority, such as a judge, and they escape into an imaginary world taken from the stories of Mowgli. Nearly nine years on, Leslie and Donnie are homeless in San Diego, getting by through prostitution and theft.
