Plot summary
In September 1939, two days after the Second World War began, Sigmund Freud receives C. S. Lewis in his study. Lewis, nicknamed Jack, has recently turned from atheism to Christianity, and Freud resents it. The two men debate whether God exists. Their talk also covers Lewis's post-traumatic stress as a combat veteran of the First World War, Tolkien and the Inklings, and how each man stands with the people close to him, among them Anna, Freud's daughter, who depends on her father.
