Plot summary
Rina Crane is a teenage student. Her father Hemi is an associate professor who was passed over for a full professorship and blames discrimination against Māori. Her mother Margaret is a food guru, and Hemi suspects her of an affair with an associate, which strains the marriage. Rina's brother Glenn has not come home. In the refrigerator Rina comes upon a human hand, and her parents look unsurprised rather than shocked. Meanwhile Richie Tan, held in a police van, is freed by his brother Paulie, Richie's girlfriend Gigi and an explosives expert named Johnny. The breakout flips the van and injures Richie, and the group falls to arguing. Their getaway van ends up in the Cranes' garage, and the criminals hold the family at gunpoint.
