Plot summary
Free City is an online game where players in sunglasses fight each other and cause mayhem, while the non-player characters go about their scripted lives unaware that their world is a game. Guy works as a clerk in its bank; his best friend Buddy is a security guard. In the real world, Millie Rusk, an unemployed software developer, plays the game as MolotovGirl, searching for proof that the company behind Free City took the source code from Life Itself, the concept game she built with Keys, which used new artificial intelligence techniques for its characters. Keys now works in technical support there and is unwilling to help her. MolotovGirl sings Guy's favorite song, catching his attention, and he starts to depart from his programming.

- Director Shawn Levy originally passed on the Free Guy script, but after Hugh Jackman introduced him to Ryan Reynolds, they decided to work on the film together, and Levy left the Uncharted adaptation to make Free Guy.
- Chris Evans's cameo was suggested by Ryan Reynolds's wife Blake Lively; director Shawn Levy asked Evans, then in Boston shooting Defending Jacob, to come by for ten minutes, and he agreed.
- Director Shawn Levy originally wanted The Outfield's "Your Love," but Ryan Reynolds suggested Mariah Carey's "Fantasy"; Reynolds got Carey's permission to use it throughout, and Jodie Comer also sang a cover.
- Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek made a posthumous cameo in Free Guy, his final film role before his death on November 8, 2020.
