Joseph rides a hay wagon when some hay falls onto Major von Stomm, who slaps him. A postman brings a letter from America, and Joseph has the offer of a job there, though the journey costs a great deal. For Mother Bernle's birthday the town gathers to dance, and she gives Joseph the money she has kept hidden. He leaves for the United States, marries Annabelle and runs a delicatessen.
