Plot summary
A Royal Flying Corps squadron is quartered on the Berthelot farm in France, close to the front. Jeannine Berthelot and her mother, Madame Berthelot, work the place, and Jeannine mothers and teases the seven young aviators, among them the impish Kid, while Mike the Mechanic keeps the aircraft in order. Captain Philip Blythe arrives as a replacement for a flyer who was lost. On his first landing he almost runs down Jeannine, who is wearing mechanic's overalls with grease on her face; taking her for a boy, he scolds and cuffs her. She vows revenge, then her feelings soften, and she prays in the lilac garden before a statue of Joan of Arc, asking the saint to make him love her. Philip, though, is engaged to Lady Iris Rankin.

- For realism, many of the extras cast as soldiers in Lilac Time were actual World War I soldiers, appearing in the ranks they had served in.
- Stunt pilot Dick Grace had finished work on Paramount's Wings (1927) only two months before Lilac Time, having recovered from a severe neck injury suffered in a stunt crash on that earlier film.
- Lilac Time was shot at First National's Burbank studio and in El Toro, California, where a working airstrip, a full-sized French village and a farm serving as a Royal Flying Corps base were built; the deserted village of Allaire, New Jersey was used for backdrops.
