Plot summary
Jane Hoyt travels to Hong Kong to look for her husband Louis, a photojournalist who crossed into Communist China without papers and is being held there as a suspected spy. At the Hong Kong Marine Police she meets Inspector Merryweather, who recovered Louis's cameras from the junk that carried him over the border. He can offer her little help, but he mentions Hank Lee, an American expatriate known for smuggling and other shady business. Jane approaches Hank and asks him to arrange her husband's escape. He tells her the venture is foolhardy and urges her to give it up. She refuses.
