Plot summary
Waverly Liu had her summer mapped out until her parents rearranged it, replacing a visit with them in Taipei with an internship in Toronto. She slips away instead to Holden, a small coastal town where her aunt Rachel takes her in. Downtown, Waverly finds Rachel painting a mural and hears that Rachel and her sister have not spoken in years. Lena welcomes her at the cafe and invites her to a barbecue at the dock, where Waverly meets Blake Hamilton, a lifeguard, his sister Isabel, and Lena's partner Van. A scuffle between the siblings sends Waverly into the water, and Blake dives in after her. The next morning she admits she cannot swim, and he offers to teach her, though she says she is leaving for Toronto the following day.
