Plot summary
During a childhood game in the Austrian Alps, Türlich loses consciousness on a duck nest and the river carries him away. Sixteen years on, he is an orphan in Germany's Ruhr region, doing his civil service alongside his friend Josch. Their time in the service produces so much chaos that the pair choose to run rather than be drafted into the army, and a trace of information about where Türlich came from sends them to Klein Ischgl in Austria. The two arrive in Ischgl, a center for après-ski partying, and drink heavily to fit in. Their destination, Klein Ischgl, sits higher up the mountain, a townlet of nine inhabitants; Türlich's grandfather runs it and refuses electricity and indoor plumbing.
