Plot summary

The Cantorianer order holds that God is found above all in music, a belief that led to its excommunication from the Catholic Church centuries ago. Its last four monks live in the dilapidated buildings of Auersberg Abbey in Brandenburg, where a landowner turns up demanding back rent that the order cannot pay. The abbot suffers a heart attack and tells the others to take the order's precious rule book, the Regula cantorianorum, to the only other Cantorianer monastery, in Italy. The three who remain, Benno, Tassilo and the young Arbo, set out on foot with little idea of the route, and a journalist from Stuttgart, Chiara, takes them into her car. When her petrol runs out, they camp in the woods, where Arbo, who has never met a woman, is fascinated by her.
