Plot summary
Jake Davis is a novelist whose work has won a Pulitzer Prize. He lives with his wife and their daughter, Katie. One night, on the drive back from a party, a quarrel with his wife about another woman takes his attention from the road, and their car strikes a truck. His wife dies, and Jake is left with brain damage that brings on seizures. A doctor tells him the seizures need treatment or they may turn into psychotic episodes. Jake goes to a hospital for seven months, and Katie lives with her aunt and uncle, Elizabeth and William. When he comes home, the couple, attached to Katie, offer to adopt her; Jake refuses.
